CONSTRUCTION AND QUALITY PERFORMANCE REPORT UPDATE FOR WEST DAYBREAK (WD) COOPERATIVE SIDE-CHANNEL ON EAST FORK LEWIS RIVER
A “site walk and measure” check was done Sept. 11th 2013, on the West Daybreak East Fork Lewis River new south riverbank Side-channel located within the Clark County Daybreak Park and just downstream of the Daybreak Bridge.
Flow in the East Fork river channel was about 65 cfs. Flow out of the 4 ft. deep WD Side-channel was about 1.7 cfs. Water from the river was not flowing directly into the side-channel entrance and most of the flow out of the side-channel from groundwater.

Juvenile salmonids were observed hiding around the root-wads in the 425 ft. side-channel and surfacing to catch small bugs or insects near the water surface. The condition of the erosion blanket was good and grass was growing up through the blanket as well as other seeded areas of the project (see attached photos). The larger vegetation planted by Colf Construction on the bank tops with an excavator was also thriving. Air temperature in the Vancouver area had peaked at about 95 F.
According to US Geological Service ground water studies, the average ground water temperature west of the Cascade Mountains is 52 degrees Fahrenheit (F) and depends on local climate and ground conditions. A ground water temperature of 55 F to 57 F is not uncommon in Southwest Washington.
